EG4.1: Ventilation and air quality
Ventilation must be suitable for the number of dogs and the work taking place.
It must remove excess heat, moisture, airborne hair and product fumes without exposing dogs to harmful draughts or exhaust gases. Vents and filters must be kept clear.
Natural ventilation is acceptable where it remains effective and does not compromise security or dog welfare. Mobile units must have an operational temperature-control system capable of maintaining safe and comfortable conditions inside the unit while dogs are present.
Assessor checklist
Requirement
Ventilation must remove excess heat, moisture, airborne hair and product fumes without exposing dogs to harmful draughts or exhaust gases. Vents and filters must be kept clear. Natural ventilation is acceptable where it remains effective at normal occupancy and does not compromise security or dog welfare. Mobile units must have an operational temperature-control system capable of maintaining safe and comfortable conditions inside the unit while dogs are present.
What the Assessor Checks
Assess air movement, condensation, odours, vents and filters during operation. Confirm ventilation does not compromise security or dog welfare. For mobile units, check that the temperature-control system operates and can maintain safe and comfortable conditions inside the unit.
Result:☐ Meets Standard☐ Action Required☐ Critical Non-Compliance☐ Not Applicable

EG4.2: Temperature control and monitoring
The temperature where dogs are kept must be monitored using a working thermometer in a suitable position.
The business must set clear points for taking action in hot or cold conditions. These must consider humidity, heat from equipment and the needs of the dogs using the facility.
Action must be taken before conditions become unsafe. Work in the affected area must stop if suitable conditions cannot be maintained.
Assessor checklist
Requirement
The business must monitor temperature where dogs are located, using a working thermometer positioned to reflect their environment. It must define practical action points for heat and cold, considering humidity, equipment heat and the dogs accepted, and act before conditions become unsafe. Work must stop in an affected area if safe conditions cannot be maintained.
What the Assessor Checks
Check thermometer location, the operator’s action points and a hot- or cold-weather scenario.
Result:☐ Meets Standard☐ Action Required☐ Critical Non-Compliance☐ Not Applicable

EG4.3: Lighting
Work areas, holding spaces, access routes and exits must have enough light to identify hazards, check cleanliness and observe dogs.
Lights must be secure and protected where breakage could cause harm.
Portable or emergency lighting must be available where a loss of normal lighting would prevent safe evacuation.
Assessor checklist
Requirement
Work areas, holding spaces, access routes and exits must have sufficient lighting to identify hazards, inspect cleanliness and observe dogs. Lights must be secure and protected where breakage is a risk. Portable or emergency lighting must be available where loss of lighting would prevent safe evacuation.
What the Assessor Checks
Inspect lighting in use and test the response to loss of normal lighting.
Result:☐ Meets Standard☐ Action Required☐ Critical Non-Compliance☐ Not Applicable

EG4.4: Noise and vibration
Equipment and the layout of the facility must reduce avoidable noise and vibration affecting dogs and people.
Waiting and resting areas must be protected from concentrated equipment noise where reasonably practicable. Staff must have any hearing protection needed.
Materials used to reduce noise must be cleanable and must not block ventilation.
Assessor checklist
Requirement
The layout and condition of equipment must minimise avoidable noise and vibration affecting dogs and people. Waiting and resting spaces must be protected from concentrated equipment noise where practicable. Necessary worker hearing protection must be available. Acoustic measures must remain cleanable and must not obstruct ventilation.
What the Assessor Checks
Assess equipment positioning, vibration, waiting areas and any worker noise controls.
Result:☐ Meets Standard☐ Action Required☐ Critical Non-Compliance☐ Not Applicable
Assessor Notes / Evidence / N/A reason:______________________________________________________
Evidence
Operating observation, thermometer, environmental action points, ventilation maintenance and lighting checks.
